On The Issues

Brooke Pinto has a proven track record of delivering results and will fight on Capitol Hill for our autonomy and self-governance, for our families, for a fair economy for working people, and for public safety in all of our neighborhoods.

Over the last eighteen months, we’ve watched as every single day the Trump Administration is trampling on our rights as Washingtonians and trying to strip power from our local leadership.

We need a leader in Congress who knows how to take on the tough fights with the Trump Administration and Republicans in Congress – fighting for self-governance, our rights, and our freedoms. The federal surge in our city is a reminder that Washingtonians still cannot chart our own course. This is a time to fight for the city we love and call home. Brooke knows that our city needs a champion in Congress to defend our values in the District as we continue to fight for DC statehood.

Brooke will build on what Congresswoman Holmes Norton has done on our behalf for decades: to be a clear voice for DC, make our city a place where everyone can afford to live, support our small businesses, renters and long time homeowners, and uplift our young people.

We need to continue on the path to self-determination and statehood, and that starts with sending someone to Congress with a track record of working across divides to deliver tangible results. Brooke will fight so that “taxation without representation” is finally a thing of the past.

The Trump Administration’s attacks on the federal work force have proven that DC remains too reliant on the government to power our economy – and if we’re going to survive, we have to build an innovation-first economy.

That means building an economy that actually works for working people – and we need a government that helps ensure that families can afford a home, find a good paying job, and retire with dignity. And that means sending a Delegate to Congress who will fight to attract the industries of the future to DC – from artificial intelligence, to healthcare, crypto, defense manufacturing, and tech.

Our city’s diversity is our strength – we lead the nation in culture, in education, in sports, and in entertainment. So it’s no secret why so many people want to move here – but unless we can harness the incredible potential of our city to build a new economy, we’re going to remain at the whims of changing Administration’s priorities.

Brooke has already worked tirelessly to transform the business licensing regime in DC to make it easier for small businesses to open and stay open. She has championed the reimaging of our Downtown core to include housing that is affordable and has secured funding to maintain the cultural vibrancy of our neighborhoods.

In Congress, Brooke will fight to bring costs down, by fighting Trump’s disastrous tariffs plan that is raising costs on DC residents and all Americans, fight for new opportunity zones, especially east of the river, and travel the world to convince industries to invest in DC.

Our country is in the middle of a housing crisis – and DC is at the forefront. Tens of thousands of Washingtonians spend more than half their income on rent and buying a home and building generational wealth feels impossible for too many. And when it comes to buying their first house in the city they grew up in? An impossible dream. We have a shortage of housing, a shortage of political will, and the snowballing effects of decades of decisions that made both problems worse.

We live in a city etched by decades of failed ‘urban renewal’ and redlining policies that kept the opportunity to build generational wealth unavailable for too many. In the 1950’s and 60’s, more than 20,000 residents and 15,000 businesses were forced out of Southwest DC in one of the largest urban renewal projects anywhere in the country. The affected community was over 70% Black and 90% poor. Sixty years later, the promised economic ‘renewal’ never arrived for many residents.

We have a responsibility to fix what these failed housing policies broke. That means being honest about history, and it means being bold about what comes next. We need bold, big reform that builds homes people can actually afford – and that requires a local and federal partnership.

Washingtonians know that we don’t need Trump to keep us safe – we need our local law enforcement who know our communities to be empowered to do their jobs. The National Guard and ICE patrolling our streets isn’t helping – it’s hurting the important work our police do every day to build trust and protect our neighborhoods.

No one knows DC’s safety ecosystem like Brooke Pinto – for the last three years, she’s served as the Chairwoman of the Council’s Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety. In the face of rising crime rates following the COVID-19 pandemic, Brooke brought together concerned residents, community advocates, the Mayor, DC Attorney General, and DC Council to pass sweeping public safety bills – Secure DC and Peace DC. Following the passage of these bills, DC has experienced a 50% decrease in violent crime in the city.

Brooke’s public safety record – including the passage of Secure DC – has made our city safer with common sense measures like gun safety regulations, new protections for victims – including victims of domestic violence, accountability measures, and improvements to DC’s 911 system. As Chairwoman of the Council’s Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety, Brooke knows how critical it is to support our first responders, firefighters, EMS, and police department – and that’s why she’s proudly endorsed by our local firefighters union, IAFF 36. Brooke will fight on Capitol Hill to ensure that our city gets the resources it needs to protect our communities the way we know best.

Brooke knows that we must support our families to be able to live, work, play, and raise their children in DC with a myriad of opportunities. While the Trump Administration is undermining public education, DC is reaching new heights in providing an excellent education for tens of thousands of students, sending students to college, and pioneering alternative career paths for high school students and adult learners.

Brooke has championed and passed legislation to train our teachers to better teach our kids to learn to read and set them up for future success inside and outside of the classroom. Her legislation to supercharge literacy instruction has made DC the fastest improving literacy jurisdiction in the country today. And last year, schools across the District banned cellphones from the classroom following the passage of Brooke’s legislation to remove these distractions from our schools.

Our teachers show up every day dedicated to empowering the next generation and Brooke stands in support of teachers with fair pay and adequate resources in the classroom. Brooke will bring this dedication to our kids, families, and educators to Capitol Hill to ensure our public and charter schools can thrive.

In DC our families take many shapes and sizes and we embrace and celebrate the diversity of all of them. Many families in DC fear being torn apart whether it’s because of the country they came from or because of the person they love. It’s wrong that the Trump Administration has instilled this fear. Brooke knows we must fight for the things and people we love. She will defend our DC families – in all the beautiful forms they come in.
